The roots of the Souvenir Jacket, or Sukajan in Japanese, can be traced back to American soldiers stationed in the Pacific following the end of World War II. During the post-war occupation, American troops began using traditional Japanese designs and hand-stitching them into the backs of their jackets to commemorate their time in Japan. Popular designs included Japanese (and Chinese) style dragons, cherry blossoms and trees Some would also opt for artwork that could have ranged from local maps to Geisha girls These pieces would often use rayon and silk Â
Drawing from the post-war American presence in Japan, the Sukajan jacket of the 1940’s-1960’s has been beautifully reproduced by one of the best out there. Â
The body of the garment is cut from a unique acetate rayon, original to Tailor Toyo in Japan. Their choice and design of fabric is aimed at producing the most aesthetically vintage looking garment as possible, after studious research on original vintage garments. Taken from their vast archive in Japan, Tailor Toyo are able to successfully create a garment steeped in post-WW2 history with a true authentic, vintage feel.Â
This limited edition Sukajan features a combination of Japanese imagery & landscapes showing Mt. Fuji, a traditional Japanese Pagoda & dragons on a blue acetate base. The reverse is a black acetate shell and shows an intricate dragon as if it is approaching the viewer.Â
